Q. WHy was the SafeSpace Germ Fogger Discontinued?
A. Early in 2020 a new Disinfecting and Deodorizing Germ Fogger formulation and label was submitted to EPA for certification to replace the old formulae. The new formulae and label was approved and the old formulae and label certification was retired. Though the new formulae/label was approved for EPA disinfectant certification status, the “Total Release and Fogger” claim(s) on the new label were struck and disallowed. So effective November 2020, the US Environmental Protection Agency is apparently not allowing EPA registered, aerosol, sanitizing/disinfecting products, to place Total Release and Fogger claims on their labels. No reason(s) for the change were provided by the EPA. At this time aerosol pesticides, mold/fungi killers, air deodorizers, air fresheners and air sanitizers do not appear to be subject to this new label change.
NOTE: This change does NOT mean that previous EPA registered, aerosol disinfectants with the Total Release and Fogger claims were not registered EPA disinfectants, as they were. Feel free to contact the US Environmental Protection Agency directly with specific questions or for any further information or clarification on this change.
We speculate that the “Reason(s)” for this change might be one, or a combination of the following:
- No standardized and quantifiable efficacy testing exists that equally compares sanitizer/disinfectant distribution from a “total release fogger” and a “manually actuated spray,” from a comparable aerosol container, under comparable circumstances.
- The EPA took this action as a way to reduce application/processing time and requirements for new sanitizer/disinfectant products to be brought expeditiously to market during product shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The EPA is presently experiencing massive new application processing slowdowns (said to be 18-24 months behind) and is doing everything possible to reduce applications.
- Long established companies, heavily vested in manually actuated, aerosol spray products, were losing market share to newer companies marketing total release floggers and the established companies used their “influence” to get disinfectant foggers of the market.
